Despite what the legions of doe-eyed teens who enter the porn industry every month tend to think, a career in the adult industry is most likely not going to parlay into any sort of mainstream success. It is difficult enough to garner staying power in porn, let alone land roles from Hollywood producers after one has taken off their clothes in the name of making a smut film. Because the odds are so slim that conventional parts will be granted to former starlets, the elusive few who make the cut should be celebrated, or at least acknowledged for their accomplishments.
Sasha Grey, born Marina Ann Hantzis, is one of the younger ladies worth a mention. Speaking of young, in 2008, Sasha became the youngest woman to be awarded an AVN for Female Performer of the Year. She spent a modest three years doing adult work, but she made a name for herself and somehow managed to parlay that into traditional work, including being cast by famed director Steven Soderbergh in The Girlfriend Experience. This led to a role on an HBO series as well as a co-starring stint with Jeremy Piven and Rob Lowe in the 2011 movie I Melt with You. Most recently, she has dabbled in music and fashioned herself a fiction author. She has completed an erotica trilogy, but no matter how skilled she is at putting pen to paper, we like to think her finest-honed talent is her penchant for hardcore in the flesh:
The most seasoned lady on the list is iconic Ginger Lynn. She was the quintessential 1980s porn babe and boasts a slew of AVN and XRCO awards to prove just how beloved she was before the age of online porn. Ginger also has the distinction of being Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen’s very first adult actress conquest, long before he went off the rails. Unlike many of her peers who faded into obscurity, Ginger leveraged her porn popularity to break into Hollywood. The list of her mainstream credits is noteworthy and includes films such as Young Guns II and American Pie Presents Band Camp. She has also assumed supplemental roles on several TV shows. Lynn dipped her toes back into the XXX waters in the early 2000s and can be seen in the recent documentary When Porn Ends 2, in which she discusses her legal troubles and federal prison stint over alleged tax fraud. Her life is more low-key now, and she stays connected to fans via original artwork sales and her online auction and fan websites.
Traci Lords’ history in the adult industry is scandal-laden, given the fact her true age was in question upon the release of her first adult films. Born Nora Louise Kuzma, Traci has a background in method acting study, and this has served her well as her post-porn plan saw her succeeding in several movie roles, in addition to racking up nearly 30 television appearances. She refused to accept any parts that include nudity as she worked to shed her adult actress image. While she aimed to stay in the spotlight, she also dabbled in music and was most recently seen in the American-Swedish web television series Swedish Dicks alongside Keanu Reeves.
Watched it, or didn’t watch it, everyone knows about the pop culture buzz generated by the hit series Game of Thrones that ended its impressive run this year. Known almost as much for its softcore sex scenes as it is for the gripping plot lines that kept fans hooked, it is no surprise that the show has cast former pornstars in auxiliary roles. Though several skin flick alums have been on the show, the most popular is Sibel Kekilli who has several XXX films floating around online with her performing under the alias Dilara.
This German beauty has established a high-toned mainstream career, and her status in Germany is significant. It was Game of Thrones that afforded her notoriety in the US, and what is next for her remains to be determined. Don’t expect Sibel to divulge info about her porn past, as she has shunned doing so in interviews. With an illustrious film career established in her home country, where she even won a Best Actress Award from their equivalent to the Oscars, it can be assumed we have not seen the last of her.
