A few weeks ago I wrote about how bestlistofporn cares about the gay porn niche. Well, I totally forgot that June is actually the LGBT Pride Month. I am sorry about being forgetful, but I am going to make it right by talking a bit about this worldwide event. As I have already said, June is completely dedicated to the LGBT community. Now, why June? Well, as it turns out, it is held in June in order to commemorate the Stonewall riots (or Stonewall uprising/rebellion). These happened in 1969 in New York.
So, what were these riots? These riots were spontaneous actually, and they were aimed at the government, more specifically the police. Since back then (meaning the 50s and the 60s) the LGBT population lived under the so-called anti-gay legal system. Very few establishments actually welcomed gay people, and Stonewall Inn was one of them (interestingly enough, it was owned by the Mafia). On June 28, 1969, the police lost control rather quickly during a raid on the Stonewall Inn and attracted a huge crowd and it, naturally, turned into a riot. This, effectively, led to a gay community being formed (to be technical, several of gay communities) in the New York City. The Stonewall riots are considered to be the main event that led to the modern gay liberation movement. That is why, when the people behind the Pride Month were trying to decide when it was going to be, they opted for June.
The Pride Month is very important and special to the LGBT community. First of all, since most of the Pride parades are being held during this month, it raises awareness of LGBT population in local communities. That alone is a very important thing. Even though there is some opposition when it comes to this Pride Month (both within and outside the LGBT community), the month of June was officially declared by the presidents of the United State, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, on nine occasions.
But, it is not all about the US. This Pride Month is being celebrated throughout the world. Since the LGBT community has been mostly oppressed and misunderstood in the modern age, things like the Pride Month and the Pride parades are very, very important to many people all over the world. It empowers them, it helps them spread awareness of their existence, it enables them to stand together with other members of the community and celebrate the fact that they are LGBT, as well as point out all the wrongdoings against the members of their community.
Naturally, many countries ban (or simply break up with force) any kind of Pride celebrations. Even though we are living in the 21st century, a lot of progress is needed for us to advance as the society, and inclusion and acknowledgment of the LGBT community is definitely one of the things that will help us get there.
